I LUUUUUV CLOWNS

so i was out shopping last weekend for a few ottomans and what do i see? really cool murals staring back at me. luckily my camera is small enough where i can take it everywhere so i don't miss sporadic moments like this outside a fireplace store i stumbled into.

since we're on the topic of clowns, how about some useful clown info. here, i stole this from wikipedia's entry on clowns:

"The performance is symbolic of liminality - being outside the rules of regular society the clown is able to subvert the normal order, and this basic premise is contemporarily used by many activists to point out social absurdity."

"The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. One's sense of identity dissolves to some extent, bringing about disorientation. Liminality is a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed - a situation which can lead to new perspectives."

i wonder if that somehow applies to the deeper understanding of why i like clowns so much. i certainly didn't know this before today though. oh, and if you're one of those who does not like clowns or is afraid of them, here...i got you some reading material too.

i like this quote often attributed to actor Lon Chaney, Sr.: "There is nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight." i can see a short horror film wrapped around that quote...hmmmm, the 48hr film festival is coming up...ya never know.

i'm learning something, are you?

speaking of learning something...i'm coming up on my third week (out of 16) of woodworking class. it is going very well, thank you for asking. i still have all my digits and i've just bought a woodworking vice off the local trademe.co.nz website. i plan to attach it to the workbench that i'm planning on building. it's all foward progression down here in one way or another.

someone recently told me (aside from my mother) that i was overstretched and ya know, i like being overstretched. life is fun overstretched and i don't plan to change my habits anytime soon either. i like having an oil painting in the works, or a room of the house in utter renovation mode, or two or three websites in development, or side work going to help pay for the renovations, or an evening woodworking class, or a mountian bike begging me to ride it every time i walk in the door or a new photo assignment i'm beginning or a camping weekend planned to shoot some footage or a book i'm reading or whatever else i can cook up to keep life entertaining and challenging. i'm glad i've got some hobbies and i'm proud to say i haven't turned on the boob toob ... not even to watch a movie ... in easily the last month, perhaps longer.
life is good.
