COMMENCE COUCH SURFING

this past weekend i was shocked to find myself thrust into the role of host. back in september i had signed up at couchsurfing.com because i thought it sounded like an interesting way to travel. shortly after i signed up, i was contacted by brie who wished to surf my couch. she was going to be holidaying in New Zealand for about a month and i was to be the wellington stop/connection.

friday i was up till almost 5am so i got a late start on my saturday which was fine. i ended up hitting the gym with pete for a mid-day workout against my better judgement. that brought me back to the house at about 6pm or so. when i checked my e-mail i had noticed that brie was in town and desparately trying to reach me. she had even been walking around the neighborhood playing detective trying to find my house by the clues left in my profile and in e-mail communicae. after i hurriedly responded to her two e-mails explaining that i was at the gym and had just gotten home, there came a knock at my door. i tore myself away from the receipt sorting paperwork i was resigned to do that evening and settled into the couch for an evening of 'get ta know ya' talk.

come to find out brie is from the states but has lived in Germany for the past 14 years where she works as a translator. meals were made, sewing lessons were taught, conversation exchanged. despite the crap weather and total lack of insulation at the house, i'd say the visit went fairly well. i treated her to an evening at the 'squishy seats' where we saw a fairly intense kiwi film called "Out of the Blue" which was based on a shooting spree down in Dunedin back in November of 1990. tuesday morning rolled around and i drove her to the interislander ferry where she had an 8:25am ferry to the south island. she was sad to leave the lil mt vic hide-a-way but i assured her she was always welcome anytime and that she'd have plenty of beauty to aim her camera at down on the south island.

i'm happy my first couch surfing experience was a pleasant one. thanks brie! can't wait till i'm doing the actual surfing instead of the hosting. check it out, www.couchsurfing.com - try something new, why not?
