DRESDEN DOLLS @ INDIGO

there is a bar frequently discussed here in town which somehow i've managed to avoid ever entering in my almost 6 years of living here...that was...until wednesday when the dresden dolls played a gig. the e-mail came out at work with a heavy bid to GO SEE THIS SHOW. i deleted it, then went on with my day. later, pete asked me if i saw the e-mail about the show. i said i had and that i deleted it. he was mildly outraged and sternly stated that he was going and that i should open my mind and go to the show with him. didn't take long for me to succumb to this request. as it is, i already don't get out enough so i was an easy sell. tickets were attained by gary and the show was on.

on the evening we had (in order of appearance) performances by a seatle man with an accordian - by far the most fun for the crowd, a japanese dressed band fronted by a australian guy who reminded me of a co-worker, and this horrific local kiwi band (and i'm not saying that just to slam the local music scene either). trust me, this band was bad bad BAD. plug your ears, you can't sing, its far too loud, you keyboard sounds like crap, can you say ZERO stage presence, get off the stage B A D.

finally the dresden dolls came to the stage and after a little tech hiccup with their keyboard, we were away and laughin. i had no idea what i was in for - none at all. it was a nice surprise actually. specifically, for me, the drummer. there's just something really special about seeing someone who accels so much at their chosen task and this guy certainly did...and then some...minus that one incident where he let slip a drumstick into the poor soul in the front row only a few feet from him.

i apologize for not knowing his name or having the desire to go google it but somehow i think it seems more fitting and relative to my naivety about the dresden dolls that i just refer to him as 'the drummer'. he certainly deserves much much more respect but sadly he won't find it here in the form of name recognition. i'm not gonna pretend all the sudden that i'm a dresden dolls fan. truth be told, i won't put their music in my ipod or purchase any of it but i will say however that i was pleasantly blown away by his performance...especially their version of the familiar old sabbath fave "War Pigs". that alone was worth the price of admission.

i have a friend in LA who is seeing this band sometime in the next month...she no doubt will also enjoy this show as i did. go see them, if only for the drummer (and stand 5 feet away if you can like i did) - good stuff. thank you dresden dolls and thank you pete for urging me to go along.
