STONES - 11 YEARS TO THE DAY

paul was cool enough to invite me to go check out the rolling stones with him on the 19th up in Auckland. we'd drive he says. how could i refuse a 20 hour round trip road trip and a free ticket to see the stones? i'm not even a fan of the rolling stones as evidenced by the lack of any of their music in my ipod. the road trip actually appealed to me more for some reason.

i went in with an open mind because i know they have some songs that don't totally repulse me. what i found out was that i knew about 98% of the songs they played. that and it was exactly 11 years to the day that since they last played Auckland.

i was highly surprised by the show and mick jagger's unboundless energy at 60 some odd years of age. i even got a chance to revisit part of my youth when memories came flowing back after not having heard some of this music for more than a decade. pretty weird how music can bond itself with memories so strongly.

the only really bad thing i have to say about the show is aimed at the organizers who made it impossible for me to get a bottle of water. they had them for sale at the beer stand which had a line of people more than 50 deep. i gotta say thank you to the really cool guy at the coffee stand who went against the rules and poured me a cup of water out of his supply. thanks to karim too for his photos. he got in to the shows on a press pass to shoot photos during 2.5 songs.
