quick update
to answer the question as to whether i met sir edmund hillary or not. no, i did not but i was present for his talk and my seat was so bad that i just let the vid cam run in my lap so i could get an audio recording of the event. i'll try to get my hands on the professionally filmed copy when they play it on television in a week or so.
went dive tending again today with stacy kim and team. this outting was a surface breathing dive which was interesting in that we were able to hear her breathing and talking during her 59 minute dive under the ice. a very unique experience to be staring down an ice hole and taking orders on how much slack to give the camera rope from someone who's 70 or 80 feet below you in the icy blue frozen water.
went snowboarding on thanksgiving after a mild fiesta at 3pm. josh, billy and i headed out of town at around 5pm for our 6-7 mile walk around the castle rock loop. not being one who hikes or walks all that frequently, it was a little tiring at points for me but i toughed it fine in the end. the mile long run that we had was epic because the path was newly groomed and the view of mt erebus off to our left shown brightly in the afternoon sunlight. photos will surface before too long i'm sure.
henry kaiser (one of the divers/scientists down here)was kind enough to help me out when i expressed my dismay with my situation regarding not having purchased DAT tapes along with all the other gear i purchased. he replied "oh, i have some DAT tapes i'm not using that you can have". brilliant! so, come tomorrow, i'm going to do some audio tests up in the green house to see if my interviewing people up there will be sufficient and yield usable audio for my project.
time for coffee. more later.
