when blogger breaks

you get more pictures or movies. hope you can see quicktime movies...

Erebus_Timelapse_Slow_10-27-04.mov

i climbed ob hill (observation hill) today where 360 degree panoramic views of the surrounding area can be had. you are able to view things from up there that you can't see from the streets of mactown; things like: mt erebus (our active volcano), white island, black island (appropriately named due to the amounts of representative snow on each island), scott base (the kiwi base two miles around the corner), castle rock, williams field and the whole ice runway.

i watched helicopters and planes take off, the latter of which, as smoggy as they are, are probably somewhat responsible for helping deplete the ozone in some way or another.

as evidenced in the quicktime movie above, i set up my vid cam, taped hand warmers on the battery to keep that warm (the cold has been known to drain batteries and shut gear down just like that. i experienced it once down here so far) and let it run for a whole hour while it was aimed at mt erebus. it certainly was beautiful from atop ob hill. i hung out for about two hours just relaxing and taking in the views. it would have been perfect if i could have changed the soundtrack in my head from construction vehicle noise to silence with a slight breeze.

while i relaxed, reclining on a rock just to the left of the giant cross, another red parka slowly grew in size as brian (DA: dining room attendant) made his way up the hill. nice guy. he's writing stories for his local newspaper back in new york. he had me snap off a few pics. i mentioned that i thought it would be more dramatic if he raised his hands over his head in a triumphant pose. he did so at my suggestion. brian, who climbs the hill often also mentioned that he never has seen the weather as calm as it was. i felt lucky to have had that weather for my first visit up the hill.

halloween fever is also creating quite the buzz down here. i hear it's the biggest baddest fiesta of the season and that people go off. i may or may not attend depending on the outcome of the dive tending. i'm headed out onto the sea ice with some of the "beakers" (scientists) who happen to be really really nice people. we're headed to a fishing hut which is around the corner. should take us about 30 minutes to get there in a piston bully (a vehicle with tracks like a bull dozer). it'll be nice to get away from town, even if for only a short while. the new views will be very much welcomed. we'll see what kind of footage i come back with...

love the video. what is the source of the steam coming from the mountain? Is it a volcano?

yes it is a volcano. it's the only active volcano down here. in the building that i clean, they have a live video feed from the rim. sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. it's pretty cool to peer into an active volcano that's just over the hill and not knowing when some catastophic event is going to happen.
