dive tending lesson : don't shake the tupperware

i had the wonderful opportunity to go dive tending today with a group of scientists (stacy, rob, and jennifer) that are completing a three year study of waste water on the environment-visit their website to learn more. mcmurdo's waste used to be dumped into the bay before they got a waste treatment plant installed. dive tending is essentially the opportunity to get away from mactown for a little while so i jumped at the chance. it's not too terribly difficult either; chipping and shoveling ice off of ice holes (what'd you call me?) and helping the divers get dressed in their dry suits is about the extent of it. i hope i get the chance to go out with them again as it was thoroughly enjoyable, exciting, educational and new.

here are some photos from the previous ob hill climb as well as today's dive tending adventure.

oh, here's one last thing that's kinda funny (if you're not jennifer). jennifer has been wanting to collect a test (the skeleton or remnants of a sea urchin). these little things are very very fragile and if you've ever held one in your hand, you'll know what i mean. well, the other group of divers came up with a bag of goodies (urchin, starfish, algae and a perfectly oval shaped test). jennifer expressed interest in the test which resulted in her being given the precious find. things were great, things were fantastic until we returned to the dive shack back at mcmurdo. there, we unloaded all the gear and quickly returned it all to it's proper location. being the good dive tender that i am and with my careful eye, i noticed a tupperware bin sitting on this wooden crate outside. having recognized this as kim's bagel container from earlier, i picked it up, gave it a quick shake shake and then turned around where jennifer was exiting the storage room. i said "oh hey jen, i saw this sitting on the crate and wanted to know where this should go". she replied "you didn't shake it did you?" oh, no!!!! you can see the results in the above gallery.

i felt so stupid but then laughter ensued and i knew she wasn't gonna kick the livin doo doo out of me.

ok, i lied. here's one last thing...a little vid i shot out there. blew my mind...Seal scare

wow. great stories. the footage of the seal is awesome! you really are seeing some amazing things down there G. Love the volcano as well, I had no idea there was one down there.
I sent you some more info on the audio setup. I forgot to add that with the setup I describe you will need 9 volt and double A batteries. Lots of them. If you want me to send some from here just let me know. Dick Smith's has packs of 50 AA batteries for pretty cheap.
